One of the most common questions I hear is this:
“Does oiling increase dandruff?”

The short answer is,  NO, oils don’t cause dandruff. In fact, when used properly, Ayurvedic oils can help reduce it. Let me explain why.

What Is Dandruff in Ayurveda?

In Ayurveda, dandruff is called Darunaka. It’s typically caused by a doshic imbalance, especially of Vata and Kapha.

  • Excess Vata leads to dryness, flakiness, and a rough scalp texture.

  • Excess Kapha creates oiliness and heaviness, which can block follicles and promote fungal growth.

When both are out of balance, the scalp becomes the perfect environment for fungus and flaking, which are the classical signs of dandruff.

Why Dandruff May Seem Worse After Oiling

Many people say their dandruff gets worse after applying oil. But the problem usually isn’t the oil — it’s how it’s being used.

If you apply oil to a scalp that is unclean, imbalanced, or not properly prepared - the oil can trap existing impurities, flakes, and moisture, creating an environment where fungus thrives. This can make it seem like your dandruff is increasing — when in fact, the scalp simply wasn’t ready to receive nourishment.

Ayurvedic Oils That Help With Dandruff

Properly formulated Ayurvedic scalp oils can actually help treat the root cause of dandruff by restoring balance.

Ingredients like:

  • Sweta Kutaja – known for its antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties

  • Dhatura – traditionally used to purify the scalp and reduce microbial activity

…are incredibly effective at cleansing and reducing dandruff.

Why One-Time Solutions Don’t Work

Dandruff is often a chronic condition — not something you can fix with a single product or chemical treatment. Like all imbalances in Ayurveda, it requires:

  • Consistent care

  • Right ingredients

  • Correct application method

That’s why I always recommend using a dedicated scalp prep oil regularly. Oils like my Scalp Prep Oil are designed to cleanse first, before moving on to deep nourishment.

Final Thoughts

So no — Ayurvedic oils do not cause dandruff.
They only appear to, when applied without proper scalp preparation.

When used correctly, with the right herbs and approach, Ayurvedic scalp oils actually help restore balance, reduce fungal activity, and support long-term scalp health.
