    Dosha Balancing Hair Care

How does the dosha balancing approach help prevent excessive hair fall, and general scalp and hair health

The fundamental Ayurveda philosophy is all about balancing the doshas - and this is how health is achieved. It is not about adding some specific "active" herb for its ability to address an issue. Same applies for hair and scalp health.

The acharyas have designed many popular medicines (classical books contain thousands of formulae). When we understand the design of these formulations, we find that they are not a concoction of ingredients for a particular problem.

The products definitely contain such ingredients but also ingredients that balance the doshas. The formulations have both types of ingredients - each included with a specific purpose and the combination finds a way to maintain the balance of the doshas.

Khalitya is the Sanskrit word for excessive hair-fall and is widely used in the classical Ayurvedic texts.

Susrutha classifies this under the Kshudra Rogas (non-life threatening diseases) while Charaka and Vaghbata (Astanga Hridaya) classifies this under Siro rogas (diseases of the head).

An unbalanced unhealthy scalp means that the hair roots are weak, cannot absorb nourishment easily and thus are starved of nutrition.

For example, if Kapha dosha is low, nutrition reduces and does not reach the hair roots. This is like a clogged pipe blocking nutrition. Or, if Kapha dosha is high, the hair roots have a hard time absorbing the nutrition. This is like a non-stick pan, nutrition is repelled.

The bottomline? Hair that is started of nourishment.

Hair fall is generally due to specific types of dosha imbalances which can be handled by a single dosha balancing oil.

I have explained in depth on my YouTube channel about the two types of scalp imbalances that cause excessive hair fall. These specific types of dosha imbalances are what the oils are designed to work on - and the ingredients are carefully formulated for this.

However, if the scalp imbalance is major, no oil can help you. It requires deeper interventions which can be done with internal Ayurvedic medicines.

A well designed dosha balancing hair oil can keep the scalp in dosha balance because the imbalances are less severe - and very specific to excessive hair fall. You don't need a Prakriti analysis for this.

    Let me explain.

Prakriti analysis, when done correctly, is like the CT scan of Ayurveda. It is mainly relevant for serious diseases - and requires a skilled doctor to perform.

Khalitya (hairfall) has always been defined as a kshudra roga (not severe disease) by the acharyas because the level of imbalances of the doshas are not impacting organs, reduce health or life threatening. Would you do a CT scan for a normal headache due to cold? But if it is a migraine the doctor may suggest a CT scan.

Definitely, you can use them - they are good oils. However, I believe they have been designed for a past lifestyle that is rare in the modern era - which seem to cause more imbalances.

By lifestyle, I also mean food habits, the time people go to sleep, general level of physical activity, massive traveling and that too over long distances and different climatic zones.

In my experience of so many years as a doctor, I have found traditional oils to be very effective if the person lives a traditional lifestyle. I.e., gets up early morning, sleeps early, eats frugally, no chemicals, no air conditioning or even fan, does heavy physical labour (farming, washing, brooming, carrying water etc).

The effectiveness goes down because the use of chemicals, soaps, stress levels on the body are higher in the modern era due to many unhealthy lifestyle habits which did not exist 100 years ago.

I created my Two-Oil dosha balancing hair oils in order to cater to the modern lifestyle and have found them to be effective over many years and many patients. Our oils are inspired by traditional formulations and have been designed keeping a modern lifestyle in mind.

Most sites give out Prakriti results with a few standard questions and if you go to multiple sites, you will get different results. This is because Prakriti is not so trivial that it can be captured by a few standard questions. Another reason is that the answers that are captured could be due to Vikriti (imbalance).

In my experience Prakriti analysis needs years of experience of seeing patients. Only an experienced Ayurvedic doctor, and that too after a period of in-depth questioning and in-person analysis of the person can arrive at the persons Prakriti and Vikriti (the imbalance). It is done together during the consultation process - preferably in person or at least when the doctor can see the patient.

It saddens me to see that such a complex concept like Prakriti analysis is trivialized.

Baldness is due to dead hair follicles and no science can revive something that is dead. So, no - Ayushoveda's dosha balancing Two-Oil hair oils will not help.

However most people have situations wherein the follicles become dormant or weak due to lack of nutrition. These weak or dormant follicles can either die (causing baldness) or be revived through proper nutrition.

The dosha balancing oils provide dosha balance and nutrition to revive dormant or weak follicles and you will be able to experience hair growth in areas where follicles have gone dormant.

However areas where the hair has not been growing for a long time means the follicles are likely dead and it is impossible to revive them.

    The two oils approach

Why two oils, how they work together

Today’s scalp is bombarded with pollution, chemicals, rapid temperature and moisture differences from AC rooms, soaps etc making it unhealthy, coating it with residue etc.

This is why Ayushoveda provides Two-Oils - a Scalp Prep Oil to clean dead skin, residue and prepare the scalp to receive the balancing and growth nutrients from the second oil - the Hair Growth Oil.

This is just like a farmer before he does his farming, he ploughs and tills the land so that the right kind of environment is created for the plants to grow healthy.

The Ayushoveda Two-Oil routine works in this way

    • Phase 1 : Cleans & preps the scalp from dandruff, buildup etc so the scalp can better absorb the dosha balancing growth oils
    • Phase 2: The dosha balancing ingredients in the growth oil are absorbed by the scalp, making it dosha balanced and healthy. A balanced scalp means healthier hair roots that can better absorb hair nourishment.
    • Phase 3: The growth nutrients easily reach and can get absorbed by the hair roots. The hair grows well on a healthy foundation of a dosha balanced scalp.

This is core Ayurveda for you, the dosha balancing way.

It is hard to know how any other hair oil has been designed and whether they will balance or impact doshas on your scalp. Hence it is better that you stick to dosha balancing Two-Oil routine for at least six weeks - so as to give it a fair try.

Note that Ayushoveda Two-Oils have been designed to balance the doshas on the scalp, improve hair roots and then provide nourishment. The two oils also have a symbiotic relationship with the first one preparing the scalp to increase the effectiveness of the other.

Sure, you may use the Scalp Prep Oil to free your hair of dandruff. use it 3 times weekly to start and as you progress you can reduce the frequency depending on the severity of your dandruff.

However, Ayushoveda Two-Oils have been designed in such a way that the focus is to balance the doshas on the scalp - while also reducing dandruff.

If you could open your mind to a natural regimen for your hair care, then using the Two-Oil routine would be the best solution for long term healthy and dandruff-free hair.

The Two-Oils are supposed to used separately, since the the purposes are different - one is to prepare the scalp and the other to enhance hair growth. Dr Nambi shares a short video on how to use the Two-Oils.

The first Scalp Prep Oil has to be used at a lower frequency compared to the growth oil. In any case, using them together is not harmful and will not create any issue.

You can do an additional hair prep oil depending on your scalp and dandruff situation - if you have the time.

If you don't have an extra day, then replace one of the growth oil days with the prep oil.

Dr Nambi shares the optimal way to use the Two-Oils for the best results.

Coconut oil is considered to be one of the most effective oils for hair care. Coconut oil is also ideal for absorbing herbal and dosha balancing nutrients, so it can provide those benefits to your scalp, hair roots.

Yes coconut oil freezes! We could have added an antifreeze agent to make it flow better. Is that a solution or another dosha imbalancing problem being added?

Balancing the doshas is the fundamental basis of Ayurveda and we do not wish to compromise on this core philosophy by using a less effective oil or using any additives.

    Applying the oils

Below are some common questions about how to apply the oils

The main focus of Two-Oils is to rejuvenate dormant or weak hair follicles in the scalp - and enable these to receive (balance kapha dosha if too high) and also absorb (balance kapha dosha if too low) the nutrients. Hence the focus is on the scalp.

The health of the scalp is most important for healthy hair be it any type - dry, oily, curly, straight , wavy, springy, short or long. The scalp is where one needs to balance the doshas.

However, once the scalp has got its share of oils, any excess oil can always be spread to the rest of the hair using a comb, as shown in the demonstration.

Warm oil can help to open out the follicles better and helps in better penetration of the Two-Oils. Just above body temperature is the norm in Ayurveda.

Too much heat in the oil and it might shock the system.

Just as we mentioned that you should only use luke warm water on your hair, because heat can increase “pitta’ in your scalp which is the primary reason for hairfall.

Similarly, the oils also should not too hot.The scalp should not be shocked with hot oils. Shocks can cause imbalances in the doshas (especially the pitta dosha).

Balancing is the purpose and hence “just above body temperature” should be the norm.

The main goal of the massage is to get the hair oil to every part of the scalp - and this is important for the Two-Oils to clean and prep the scalp and then to balance the doshas for better nutrient absorption.

Massaging your scalp has a few additional advantages. The first is that the massaging stretches the muscles around the hair follicles, leading to stronger roots. The blood circulation to the follicles go up, which enables the nutrients to reach the roots.

There is also a sense of relaxation during massage - and reducing stress is an important element to good hair.

Around 2 to 3 minutes of scalp massage with finger tips is more than enough for follicles and blood circulation - and for the hair oil to be spread and absorbed by the scalp.

Too long and rough massages can sometimes dislodge weak hair. This may not be a problem if you accept that healthy hair will replace the fallen ones. But many times, seeing increased hair fall due to massage can cause anxiousness.

It is better to allow the natural processes to take over and hence long massages are not recommended. Therapeutic massage for other illnesses may be done for a longer time, but not for khalitya.

After the scalp has got its share, it is perfectly okay to spread any excess oil to the rest of the hair using a wide tooth comb.

The thin film of oil on the rest of the hair acts as a good moisturizer, prevents frizziness and keeps it smooth, shiny and silky.

    After oil application

Below are some common questions on what to do after applying the oils

It is recommended that you leave the Two-Oils on the scalp and hair for at least a muhurta (45 mins).

There is no issue in keeping it on your scalp a bit longer. You can extend to even upto 2-3 hours if you have some chores to complete.

We do not recommend leaving the oils overnight - unless you are accustomed to leaving oils on your scalp for long and do not get nasal congestion.

For the first six weeks, we recommend that you try and follow the 3x/week schedule for 45 mins. Even if you miss an occasional day, don't worry. Just catch up and try to get to 3x per week.

Once your scalp becomes healthy, you can change to two times a week and continue a maintenance program. You can also supplement at this time using the Elixir.

You are only taking out 5 min from your daily routine to apply Two-Oils. In order to help you plan better, we have created a Hair Care App which will remind you when you have to put the oil. Many customers after using the app have informed me that they are much better planned and adhering to the schedule is much easier.

Any oil kept overnight on your scalp or hair may get you congested, thereby actually increasing the kapha dosha in the scalp. We have seen how excessive kapha blocks nutrients from reaching the follicles.

However, a few of my customers who have the habit of putting oil overnight have not reported adverse effects because their body has got used to overnight hair oil.

For someone starting fresh, it is not recommended to leave it overnight.

Yes, you can definitely be active - Yoga, weights, walking are all fine.

My recommendation is not to do any kind of high intensity, strenuous workout that can make you break out into a heavy sweat. A sweating scalp can increase the kapha in the body and coupled with the oil has the potential to cause colds or congestion.

    Schedule for applying oils

Below are some common questions on how to plan, and schedule applying the oils

It is recommended that you use Two-Oils at least three times a week for the first six weeks. By the end of the six weeks, you will start to see healthier hair - smoother, reduced hair fall, frizziness, etc.

Your scalp would have become healthy and would be a great foundation for better hair health. Dr Nambi has a great video that explains everything.

Once your scalp becomes healthy, you can change to two times a week, because the objective becomes maintenance. You can supplement using the Elixir as well.

It's like a dietary program wherein, in the initial period the diet would be stricter. Once the weight becomes manageable, you could maintain it with a less strict diet.

But if you see problems returning, go back to Two-Oils routine till they go away.

We have asked to apply Two-Oils “at least three days” per week. That's because most people do not use oil everyday or more frequently than three days a week. We have designed the product taking this into consideration, so that the nutrients are enough for the off days.

If you are in the habit of using oils everyday, you have the ideal ‘Ayurveda’ habit which talks about oil usage everyday. Please go ahead and use the Hair Growth oil everyday.

However, the scalp prep oil should be used only the number of times and frequency recommended.

However it must be understood that the body has a natural rhythm and using the oil more frequently doesn’t accelerate hair growth.

It is best to apply the Two-Oils in the mornings. However you can do it in the early evenings too.

Please avoid doing it too late in the night because sleeping directly after that can cause an increase in kapha. Especially since people use AC, wet hair coupled with cooler air can cause cold, increasing kapha.

Follow a particular schedule and stick to it - the Ayushoveda mobile app can help.

If you miss your schedule by a day or two it is fine - you can easily catch up later in the week.

But it is not advisable to take a long break (a week or more) since that means you may have to start all over again.

Hence for a long trip, it is better to carry the Two-Oils along.

Natural methods take time because they work with your natural body rhythms.

When something works fast, there is always a catch. They generally shock the system to improve effect in one area, but you do not know any bad effect of it in another part of your body or its impact at a later day.

Is it so difficult to manage 5 minutes three times a week for healthy hair?

That is why we are committed to providing ‘core’ Ayurveda which takes your natural body rhythms (doshas) into serious consideration, and looks at balance as the key goal.

    Shampoo & Elixir

Below are some common questions about why a shampoo and elixir

A mild cleanser can be used after applying Two-Oils. From an Ayurvedic perspective, shampoo may need to be done once a week and not after every application of oil.

However in the modern era, people prefer their hair to look light and may want to remove Two-Oils after application every time before they go out. So we suggest very mild, natural shampoos which don't contain harsh chemicals and are 100% natural, paraben and sulfate free.

If you don't have one like that, Ayushoveda Gentle Natural Shampoo can be used.

Ayushoveda Gentle Natural Shampoo is one of the rare 3% of Indian shampoos that are made from 100% natural plant sources - with zero Dirty Dozen harmful chemicals.

The big difference is that harsh shampoos will remove all the oil and also strip your scalp of all natural oils too - causing severe imbalances in the scalp.

The milder shampoos will probably remove 90% of the oil and will not strip natural oils as much as the harsh shampoos.

There are mild herbal powders too. The powders generally leave much more oil on the hair (even upto 30%).

Ayushoveda Gentle Natural Shampoo is one of the rare 3% of Indian shampoos that are made from 100% natural plant sources - with zero Dirty Dozen harmful chemicals. A large majority of Indian shampoos are not natural and include Dirty Dozen chemicals that can harm scalp and hair health.

All shampoos remove oil from the hair. The harsh ones will remove all the oil including the essential oils. Even the milder shampoos will remove a lot of the oil, but are better off because they do not strip your natural oils off as much.

However all shampoos lead to dryness of the scalp, which means there is an imbalance of doshas (the vata goes up significantly along with a reduction in kapha). Even our shampoo will create this imbalance.

The big value is that we have incorporated herbs that will counteract this imbalance to a great extent. This shampoo will reduce the potential imbalance of using shampoos.

Harsh shampoos have a lot of harmful chemicals - like David Suzuki's Dirty Dozen. They may give a short term benefit, but may harm in the long term. There is recent research linking chemical hair products to cancer.

The Ayurvedic view revolves around dosha imbalances and rebalancing to maintain optimal health. Hence it is important to use natural ingredients to align with the body.

Harsh shampoos strip all your natural oils causing huge dosha imbalances in your scalp (vata goes up and kapha falls down). The body is intelligent and tries to bring the doshas back to balance by working overtime. Regular usage of harsh chemical based shampoos will force the body to play ‘catch-up’ and after sometime the body will give up. That is when your problems with these shampoos will start to emerge.

The nature of cleaning reduces kapha - especially when foaming. Even Ayushoveda Gentle Natural Shampoo will cause some imbalance - though this will be lesser than normal shampoos because it is mild and is made 100% from natural plant sources.

This is why we need to get your scalp back into balance - and this is what we have designed the Hair Nourishing Elixir.

The hair nourishing elixir  is a non-sticky, super-light oil infusion to immediately rebalance and provide all-day gentle nourishment for the scalp and to reduce frizziness and dryness of the hair.

The Elixir is beneficial in four instances:

One: Most valuable for dry scalp or hair. Use overnight for moisturizing nourishment to augment your scalp's natural oils. Since the Elixir is lightweight and non-greasy, you won't need wash your hair the next morning. (Why is elixir important for dry hair?)⬈

Two: For all types of hair. Apply after shower when you hair is dry. This provides all-day nourishment and style.

Three: While Elixir is mainly to supplement your natural oils, you can occasionally use it if you forgot to use the Two-Oils, for eg. when travelling

Four: During dry winter/cold months. The non-freeze nature of Elixir makes it convenient and valuable for continuous nourishment and to reduce dryness of scalp for everyone.

The Elixir can make you look and feel great all day long!

After you dry the hair, take a few drops and massage it into your scalp and then run your fingers through your hair. You can also apply it overnight into your scalp - it is lightweight and will be absorbed by morning.

Your scalp and hair are protected and you are good to go for the day.

    What to expect

Quick summary on what you can expect as you start with dosha balancing hair care

After 3-4 times, there would be a definite reduction in dandruff (for people who have dandruff). Frequent itching due to dandruff or microorganisms also disappears.

People who do not have dandruff - there could be residue due to pollution, chemicals, shampoo etc.. Grime, residue, or dead cells, or minor fungal infections can lead to minor itching.

Relief from all itching (minor infrequent or major) is something that all people can look forward to. You can see shinier, smoother hair that feels nicer.

In our experience, about 10% to 15% of the people have excessive hair fall in the initial weeks. But it settles down soon and you will start to experience healthy scalp, reduced hairfall and shiny, soft and healthy hair very soon. Dr Nambi explains some early concerns that people have - and why they should not be worried.

The dosha balancing oils can never cause harm. There could be many reasons for short term excessive hair fall. The most important reason is that, as the scalp starts to become healthier and the doshas get balanced, the weaker hair is likely to be rejected. This can cause the catagen phase to accelerate, seemingly creating a perception of excessive hair fall.

Another major reason is when people use oils for the first time after years of no usage or chemical hair care. The shift needs the scalp to adjust and can cause a little bit of short term excessive hair fall. Sometimes, heavy and excessive massage can shake the weak hair causing premature hair fall.

Do not worry. They anyways would have fallen very quickly. All these are short term issues and will soon pass.

Some people use oils for the first time after years of no usage or chemical hair care. The shift needs the scalp to adjust and can cause a little bit of short term excessive hair fall.

As the scalp starts to become healthier and the doshas get balanced, the weaker hair is likely to be rejected. This can cause the catagen phase to accelerate, seemingly creating a perception of excessive hair fall.

But it settles down soon and you will start to experience healthy scalp, reduced hairfall and shiny, soft and healthy hair very soon. It would entangle much less.

There would be a definite reduction in dandruff (for people who have dandruff). Frequent itching due to dandruff, microorganisms and residue also disappears. Here is Dr Nambi explaining what to expect when using the Two-Oils.

People who do not have visible dandruff may have residue due to pollution, chemicals, shampoo etc. It could mean the dandruff flakes are microscopic and not visible to the naked eye. Grime, or dead cells, or minor fungal infections can lead to minor itching. Relief from all itching (minor or major) is something that all people can look forward to.

About 10% to 15% of the people have excessive hair fall in the initial weeks. But it settles down soon and you will start to experience healthy scalp, reduced hairfall and shiny, soft and healthy hair very soon. It would entangle much less.

Hair would have gone softer, silkier, less frizziness. You will feel your hair to be healthier whatever the shape and size -  short, long, wavy, curly, straight, dry or oily.

There would be a reduced hairfall. Dandruff, itching (minor infrequent or major ) would have reduced dramatically.

Again, about 10% of the people have reported baby hair sprouting (obviously they are very small and the people looked hard) in areas that had dormant follicles. People would start noticing the difference in your hair and may ask you about your hair care regimen.

Much reduced hairfall. Hair would have become softer, silkier, no frizziness or split ends.  You will feel your hair to be healthier whatever the shape and size - short, long, wavy, curly, straight, dry or oily.

Dandruff, itching (minor infrequent or major ) would have reduced dramatically.

Again, about 30% to 40% of the people have reported baby hair sprouting (if you look carefully) in areas that had dormant follicles. It takes about 3 to 5 months for new hair to grow. You would be looking different, as far as the hair department goes, and people could ask you “what are you doing to your hair?”

With consistent usage, you can see far reduced hairfall. Dandruff, itching (minor infrequent or major ) would have reduced dramatically. Hair would have gone softer, silkier, no frizziness or split ends.

You will feel your hair to be healthier whatever the shape and size - short, long, wavy, curly, straight, dry or oily. Again, about 80% to 85% of the people have reported baby hair sprouting in areas that had dormant follicles. It takes about 3 to 5 months for new hair to grow.

Most people would start to feel that their hair has more volume. You would be looking different, as far as the hair department goes, and people could ask you “what are you doing to your hair?”

    Understanding Hairfall

Insights and understanding some of the theory behind hairfall

In broad terms dandruff, residue and level of itching could be major indicators of scalp's health and condition.

The main visible obstacle that prevents the growth oil from proper penetration into the follicles is usually dandruff.

Also, today’s scalp is bombarded with pollution, chemicals, rapid temperature and moisture differences from AC rooms, soaps etc making it unhealthy, coating it with residue etc. Even if visible flakes or bits of dandruff are not there, there could a coat of residue. Also there could be micro-organisms that can cause itching.

Dandruff is just one indicator of an imbalanced or unhealthy scalp.

However there are other factors which are nor very easy to recognise. Even if visible dandruff is not there, there could be microscopic invisible dandruff. There could be dead skin cells that can prevent oil from absorption.

Residue due to lifestyle (pollution, soaps, chemicals, etc.) can also be present.  Presence of microorganisms can cause itching.

In short, the Scalp Prep Oil makes sure all these factors are cleansed before the growth oil is used.

It is normal to shed 50 to 100 hair strands per day. Some people have seasonal variations in hairfall. They have a particular month of the year when the shedding is more. That's their natural body rhythm. There could be ill health issues or hormonal imbalances that can cause excessive hair fall.

Overall if the average normal hair fall goes beyond these figures, it can be called excessive hair fall. Just because it happens over a couple of weeks doesn’t qualify it to be excessive.

It would also be good to know whether you have seasonal variations in your hair fall.

You’re blessed if this is a natural state of affairs. You should consider Two-Oils to maintain your great mane and also to prevent future issues due to imbalanced doshas. But if you are using chemical based products to prevent hair fall and to maintain its condition, you may wish to consider shifting to Two-Oils.

The body is a very intelligent creation and it tries its best to get back into balance however much we abuse it. The body creates antibodies when attacked by germs. We all know how vaccines work. They swear by the intelligence of the body to create the right antibodies, even when it is something new like corona.

It similarly tries to balance your doshas even if you continuously do things that imbalances your doshas. An example in haircare would be the excessive usage of shampoos, which can strip the scalp of natural oils. Thus leads to an increase in vata and decrease of kapha. The body produces more sebum to manage the imbalance of the doshas. But for how long? The body has to give way at some time.

You should ask yourself the following question “Do I want to wait for the breaking point, before I decide to shift to more natural and balanced methods?
