Sleep is a state of rest for the whole system ( body, senses, mind, soul..etc). This is a state where major construction and repair of the body happens. The brain assimilates and processes most of the information received, during sleep. So sleep is a very critical state in life.
When to sleep?
Day and night are equally divided into 3, where the first part is Kapha kala followed by Pitta and Vata. So in a place where sunrise and sunset are at 6 o clock respectively. 6 to 10 is Kapha, 10 to 2 is Pitta and 2 to 6 is Vata. Since sleep is Kapha predominant, it is qualitatively opposite to Vata. At the same time keeps Pitta also under check. So one has to go to bed during Kapha period (before 10pm) and get up before the Vata period ends (before 6am).
Sleeping immediately after food is not advisable, if one is looking to manage weight. The process of eating itself elevates kapha and immediate sleep increases kapha even more. This leads to increase in weight-diva swapnam snigdham (day sleep is nourishing).
Staying awake during the night elevates Vata and thereby reduces fat promoting Kapha. This helps in weight reduction-ratri jaagaranam rooksham (sleepless night is non-nourishing).
