Ayurveda In Egypt

It gives me great pleasure and honour to be given the opportunity to lead a team and travel to Egypt from Nov 1st to 15th to propagate Ayurveda. This could be one of the first such attempts to initiate Ayurveda in Egypt.
\nIt is an amazing feeling as we take the treasure of the oldest system of medicine to one of the oldest civilizations and cultures of the world.
\nWith the support of Yoga Acharya, Swami Madhav Anand, (www.goldenhealingjourneys.in) and others who conduct Yoga Retreats, ayushoveda has arrived with Ayurveda.
\nThis might be a small step, but definitely a giant leap.
\nExpecting prayers, blessings and good wishes from all our well wishers.

Sleep and its effect on weight

Sleep is one of the three upa-stambhas (sub-pillars) on which life stays balanced. The other two are Aahaaram (dietery habits) and Bramhacharyam (sexual discipline).

Sleep is a state of rest for the whole system ( body, senses, mind, soul..etc). This is a state where major construction and repair of the body happens. The brain assimilates and processes most of the information received, during sleep. So sleep is a very critical state in life.

When to sleep?
Day and night are equally divided into 3, where the first part is Kapha kala followed by Pitta and Vata. So in a place where sunrise and sunset are at 6 o clock respectively. 6 to 10 is Kapha, 10 to 2 is Pitta and 2 to 6 is Vata. Since sleep is Kapha predominant, it is qualitatively opposite to Vata. At the same time keeps Pitta also under check. So one has to go to bed during Kapha period (before 10pm) and get up before the Vata period ends (before 6am).

Sleeping immediately after food is not advisable, if one is looking to manage weight. The process of eating itself elevates kapha and immediate sleep increases kapha even more. This leads to increase in weight-diva swapnam snigdham (day sleep is nourishing).

Staying awake during the night elevates Vata and thereby reduces fat promoting Kapha. This helps in weight reduction-ratri jaagaranam rooksham (sleepless night is non-nourishing).

Menstruation and Restrictions

2/10/2018

Why does the Indian society lay so many rules and restrictions for a woman during her menstrual cycle? Modern science and women activists have labelled this as unscientific, inhuman and/or suppression of personal choices.

How does Ayurveda interpret this?

It never says menstrual blood is impure or dirty. Moreover it says that normal menstrual blood (if not in a diseased condition) is pure and clean and doesn't leave a stain after washing.
Then what are the main restrictions and why?
1. Bathing : Menstruation is flowing due to Vata and the blood is Pitta predominant making it hot. A bath will interfere with this as it reduces the flow by the stambhana (stopping/freezing) property. Bathing, which is cooling, acts against Pitta too and interferes with the bleeding.
2. Rest : Women have been advised to take rest. This is not only a well deserved rest every month. Any activity during this period will derange the Apana Vata. This might lead to either excess, reduced or painful periods.
This is the Ayurvedic outlook towards menstruation. It is not linked to any dominance or suppression. It's pure health.
